How to Get Kids to Eat Vegetables and Healthy Foods

How to Get Kids to Eat Vegetables and Healthy Foods- Apollo Clinic Mohali

Are kids fussy eaters? Are they all genuinely against vegetables? Parents have been struggling with this issue for years, but with little success. or so we believe.

Why are children so resistant to eating vegetables? According to studies, this might be a biological and evolutionary strategy. Early humans had to forage for food, and because bitter foods were thought to be toxic, they avoided them. Similar to children, children are in an exploratory stage where they may avoid vegetables.

Kids to Eat Vegetables and Healthy Foods

Children are more flavour sensitive than adults and have more tastebuds than them, which may explain in part why they are sceptical of veggies. Children choose sweeter foods over veggies because they supply glucose, an instant energy source.

To ensure that children grow and develop into adults with healthy eating habits, it is important to instil appropriate food habits in children at a young age. You can do the following to give your kids vegetables:

  1. Avoid equating eating with praise or punishment. It may even impact your child’s connection with eating and the way they view food. Children may develop negative thoughts and behaviours toward vegetables if they are told they can have dessert if they complete their vegetables.
  2. Get them going early. Feed your child mashed, spiced vegetables at a young age to introduce them to flavours.
  3. Include those vegetables in your meal. When children see their parents avoiding vegetables, they want to follow suit because they mimic their behaviour. By sharing veggie platters, you can break this pattern.
  4. When there is food involved, involve your youngster. Take them food shopping and let them choose any appealing vegetables. Investing in colourful produce can spark their interest and motivate them to consume those vegetables. Get your kids involved in meal preparation so they can see and understand what goes into it.
  5. Prepare vegetables with basic ingredients that bring out rather than hide their best qualities. Legumes, meat, and other sources of protein can be combined to create a filling meal that satisfies their nutritional needs.
  6. Change up the way you cook your vegetables. To help kids determine how they would like their vegetables best, alternate between roasting, grilling, sautéing, and steaming vegetables. Broccoli that has been stir-fried or sautéed is considerably more tasty and delectable than broccoli that has only been steamed.
  7. Using colourful, vivid, irregularly shaped serving plates, cookie cutters, and inventive food plating can add curiosity and excitement to mealtime.
  8. Whenever you have the chance, add vegetables. Add them to soups, smoothies, thick pasta sauces or gravies, or use them to make desserts. Avoid making it a habit though; kids need to learn to appreciate vegetables just the way they are and understand that they are a necessary component of every meal.
  9. Instead of canned, bottled, or prepackaged foods, try utilising fresh produce. Processed foods are low in nutrients and heavy in salt.
  10. Prepare veggies using flavours that your youngster is accustomed to and likes. They’ll relish those meals and be more willing to try other vegetables prepared in a similar manner.
  11. It can be upsetting to completely give up snacks and less healthy food. Making healthier substitutions with vegetables or experimenting with plant-based versions of those foods can be beneficial as opposed to eliminating them.
  12. Make eating vegetables as a snack a habit. Instead of eating raw or cooked vegetables, experimenting with different dips and sauces may be more appetising.
  13. It’s important to keep in mind that kids won’t always enjoy things. Allowing your child to eat tiny quantities is preferable to overwhelming them with enormous servings that they must complete because patience is crucial. Test out many recipes to determine which ones your youngster likes and responds to.
  14. Eating while using a phone, laptop, TV, or tablet can distract children from their food and make it difficult for them to concentrate on what is on their plate. This can result in overeating, causing them to overlook nutritious foods and fail to recognise the foods they enjoy.
  15. Eating at the table as opposed to on the bed helps with posture, enables the child to gauge their level of hunger, and facilitates digestion. Children’s social skills are enhanced by sitting at a table and being encouraged to observe other family members or adults eating their vegetables.

Small changes like these can kick-start a healthy eating routine, leading to healthier people who actually enjoy the variety of foods on offer. Food need not be a punishment, and filling meals are not always necessary. In a world driven by technology, we have access to a wealth of resources, and we must use them to take deliberate actions to eat better and feel better.
